, roots-gospel

RamblinMan says: Fret Not are a band from Oakland who play old-time American roots-gospel - traditional church music from the days of the emancipation through to the depression. I first came across this lot via paste music, inspired as I was by the soundtrack album to o brother where art thou. This particular track was recorded live at a memorial day concert for the blue star moms. Can't pretend to understand what that is all about, but this particular track is a gem. One of many originals that the band have written, this is a brooding, laid-back, slow-burning piece of acoustic righteousness, topped off with (what I regard as) a distinctively sultry female voice. You don't have to like gospel or bluegrass to enjoy this, or even be a signed-up believer of any persuasion. Just sit back, download, and bask in the loveliness of this tune.

A psychedelic barnstormer of a song, this London-based 6-piece reminds me of early-80s Bunnymen, and certainly the more wigged-out moments of Stone Roses. This is...  more »
